Wannon Water Site Clearing & Remediation
Project Description
GHD – on behalf of Wannon Water – engaged Grange Environmental to remediate contaminated land for the expansion of the Warrnambool Sewage Treatment facility.
Scope of works:
- Subcontract engagement.
- Clearing and grubbing of 15,000m2 to facilitate works, including provision of alternate walking and bicycle paths for the local community to access.
- Supply of labour, plant and materials as required in regional Victoria to execute the works.
- Demolition of service trenches within the former rifle, range land segregation and recycling of all materials locally.
- Preliminary assessment using XRF technology (GHD) allowed the project team to delineate hotspots onsite and stockpile material accordingly.
- Segregation of over 4,000 m3 bulk materials from within the “Stop Butt mound” in accordance with sampling results. Waste removed including spent ordinance and other inert material. Additional hot-spot contamination removal at various locations as directed (GHD).
- Reinstate access track and grade site in accordance with the technical specifications.

Project Delivery:
Warrnambool, along with numerous regional cities, has been experiencing unexpected population growth over the last 3 years which led to the expansion of the Warrnambool Sewage Treatment Plant. To facilitate the construction phase Grange was chosen to manage the latent contamination present across the site as a result of the Warrnambool Rifle Range – an active range for over 40 years. All contaminated materials were removed from site, allowing Wannon Water to utilise the former Rifle Range and exploit further opportunities to safely expand the sewage treatment facility as required. All site works were managed in accordance with Local and State laws and executed without incident.
